Dude. The young Entrepreneur, known as Mark Zuckerberg (Facebook’s founder and CEO, *DUH!*) came to my town to speak at a local college – Brigham Young University last week!!
He mostly talked about technology and the future he sees for social media. Also, he referenced that he chooses people who are passionate about something (anything, really) over someone who isn’t. Very interesting. He sounded very humble, when reading over the dialogue from BYU’s website, and mentioned he hasn’t had to speak to that magnitude of a crowd before. Apparently, the BYU stadium was packed and Senator Orrin Hatch was also a speaker at the forum that day.
I wish I would have known before March 25th, 2011 so I could have squeezed myself in that packed stadium just to benefit from his vast knowledge and charm! I’m sad I missed it.

Wow, a piece of Provo history has been burned. The tabernacle in Provo, Utah was involved in a fire this morning. Apparently the roof has caved in.
I am seriously speechless. I am now remembering all of the family, bridals, engagement photos I have taken there and how many pictures I have shot with the building in the background. It was such a pretty brick building! I hope at least some of the building can be salvaged. It is a piece of our history here in Provo.
After the four day string of very bad accidents this past week, there were a few more accidents that happened over the weekend. It is a holiday weekend so most companies give their employees the day off on Monday for Labor Day. Still, please drive safely.
*Saratoga Springs Rollover happened on 9/4/10.
*ATV crash near Daniels Summit happened on 9/4/10.
*Dump-truck Driver runs Red Light happened on 9/5/10.
*South Jordan Accident happened on 9/5/10.
*ATV crash up American Fork Canyon happened on 9/5/10.
**This will be posted late Sunday night so there could be more to come from Monday, Labor Day.
And another pretty bad accident in the Utah County stretch of freeway. This one involved two cars and both rolled over. Both drivers were ejected and taken to hospitals immediately. This accident was due to reckless driving. Here is the story: Double Rollover Accident 9/3/10.
Butch and I were driving up towards Salt Lake at this time and got stuck in the resulting traffic from this accident. It was around 5 pm when we passed by and the BMW SUV was already on a tow truck but really smashed in and the Trailblazer was completely unrecognizable and off the road! They were picking up the Trailblazer by crane as we passed by.
As of yet, this accident hasn’t been fatal but the drivers aren’t clear yet. I guess one driver had surgery tonight. Again, please slow down people!!
AND A THIRD fatal accident on our local freeway here in Utah within THREE DAYS. (The second accident). This one was in Provo and they directed the entire freeway traffic off and through the cities of Orem and Provo until the freeway was opened again. All lanes were blocked at the scene. This is madness! I was traveling in Orem, just about to get on the freeway going Southbound but the lanes were blocked by police. So then I noticed it was empty and all the traffic was coming off the freeway and into the roads I was driving on. CRAZY traffic!! I eventually went the ‘back way’ through town to get back to Springville. I wanted to rubberneck though to see if I could see anything from the accident. I drove through Provo on the roads just beneath the freeway overpasses to see any glimpse of it but didn’t catch anything. I would have snapped a pic and posted it on here for you guys to see. Sorry.
Anyway, possible drugs/alcohol involved. The lady who caused the accident was arrested with a DUI. And one 71-year old man died as a result of this madness. Here is the full story: Provo Accident 9/2/10. And here is another version of this same accident: Daily Herald Provo Accident.
Again, PLEASE drive safely people!! Your destination will still be there when you arrive, you don’t need to speed! These construction barriers and lane changes are what I think is causing all this chaos, so please slow down for everyone’s safety. Thank you.
Apparently there was another fatal accident in Utah County. This one happened in the morning hours and more than one person died as a result. Here is the story: Santaquin Accident 9/2/10.
Provo residents (a woman and her 2 children) died from this accident. From the story: “A sport utility vehicle traveling north in the inside travel lane went to the right, then began to spin back left toward the median. Police say the vehicle rolled through the median and across southbound lanes down to the frontage road.”
Wow. Please drive safely! This is the second accident in Utah County this week!
My boyfriend was driving to work this morning between 6 and 6:30 AM and got stuck in traffic from a fatal accident. It must have happened merely minutes/seconds before he arrived in the area. KSL has a video that you can watch here:
Video Courtesy of KSL.com
Apparently, there were 3 vehicles involved, 1 semitrailer and 2 cars, crashed on Northbound I-15.
From the KSL article: “A semitrailer and two passenger vehicles crashed just as they started crossing the overpass near the 1600 North on-ramp above Geneva Road on the Orem-Lindon border.
“One of the passenger vehicles, a white full-sized van, lost control and rolled over the right-hand side jersey barrier,” said Utah Highway Patrol Trooper Todd Johnson. “That van landed below on the west edge of Geneva Road on its top, killing the driver, who is the only occupant, a 47-year-old male.’”
Read the details of this crazy story here: Orem-Lindon Accident 8/31/10.
Reminder to everyone out on the roads…Please be careful and mindful of other drivers! This could have happened to anyone. Construction is going on with our freeway and the on-ramps are shortened quite a bit to get onto the freeways. Drivers who are already on the freeway should have slower speeds so that other drivers can safely get onto the freeway from those on-ramps. My boyfriend drives truck with a double trailer behind it and I don’t want to see him get involved in any accidents, or other people around him. Please drive safe!
I hear that Tiger Woods and Elin Nordegren, age 30, have finalized their divorce.
Well GOOD FOR YOU, ELIN!!!
C’mon, just because you are a famous sports celebrity does NOT mean you can have your pick of women everywhere and anywhere!! Especially while you have a wife and FAMILY back home!
Excerpt from Yahoo News: “While we are no longer married, we are the parents of two wonderful children and their happiness has been, and will always be, of paramount importance to both of us,” they said in the statement. “The weeks and months ahead will not be easy for them as we adjust to a new family situation, which is why our privacy must be a principal concern.”
I hope they will do what’s best for their children.
And I just tweeted this:

I just looked over my statistics for this blog and found that every single day in June of 2010, I had more than 100 UNIQUE visitors each day!! This is the first time my blog has had this much traffic! {Okay it’s the 2nd time, I had this much traffic in June 2009 also.} I’m so super excited! Don’t believe me? Check this out:

So this post is overdue. This is Way Back When Wednesday.
I remember the date exactly; it was November 12, 2009 at about 4 pm. I was at work, doing things I was supposed to do, trying to whittle my workload down, when I was called in to see the Human Resource guy of my company. I was nervous, as I always am for meetings, and didn’t know why he was calling me in. So when he sat down and said this is something they never like to do, my smile faded. He said they were going to have to let me go….
I sat shocked in my seat, this news came completely out of the blue. I almost didn’t believe this was even happening. Automatically, tears starting pouring out my eyes as I was asking things like: Seriously? Wait this is for real? What am I supposed to do now? Is anyone else getting laid off? So he told me they were removing two other people from my team as well, but that they would still have a job on the call floor. Since I was hired on under Data Entry, I wouldn’t have the option to move to the call floor. He didn’t even offer it. There are 2 other people on our team that got to KEEP their jobs. One is the team manager and the other another team member just like I was. So now the team of 5, including the manager, was now a team of 2. They told me they would outsource our jobs, that they are re-arranging the team and have better resources to use at this point, which meant outsourcing. (I was thinking in my head that was such BS!!! My boss, the team director, has always said he would never outsource our work. I had always held onto the hope he gave to all of us that our jobs were secure. Apparently not, after all.)
I couldn’t believe my company was selling out. Over THREE AND A HALF YEARS I gave to them, worked my butt off, tried to gain longevity and show loyalty to this company and I get laid off as a ‘thank you’. Very nice.
So then as I’m job hunting the next day and filling out unemployment and all that, I saw on Craigslist that this very same company was looking to hire for the position of Social Media Guru and SEO Director (something to that effect anyway). As I read through the description for both job positions I realized I could have applied for either one of them, honestly. I would have probably been perfect for the Social Media Guru position. And get this… they were posted on November 4, 2009!! So this very same HR guy who let me go, had posted these 2 jobs 8 days before! And he told me in the meeting that he only found out 5 minutes before our meeting. Wow. This was a low blow.
A company I spent over 3 and a half years at, bonding with other co-workers, making chit-chat, establishing a “family” atmosphere at my home-away-from-home and now I’m just completely cut off!
And to top all of this off… I thought for sure I would remain good friends with the last two people who got to keep their jobs on that team, but guess who was wrong?! I’ve tried numerous times to contact each of them separately to keep up with them but with no response. Wow. And I thought we were good friends. We were there for each other whenever annoyances came up from our team or whenever we needed a friend and now they both are not there for me.
So as you can see, I’ve been a bit bitter about this whole event. It’s taken me a month and a half to actually conjure up the words to tell the blog world about my lay off. Now you have it. The real story. I had no idea it was coming. I was completely taken off guard. My ex-company has NOT been hit at all by this ongoing economic recession. They were in fact HIRING when this happened. And I keep seeing more job listings even this week for other positions in the company, none that I’m qualified for. They are not hurting for money. They are, in fact, money-greedy and don’t care for each and every employee they employ. Very sad.
So for Christmas, I want each and every one of you who is employed to be thankful you have a good job. I, on the other hand, lost mine a month and a half ago and STILL have no prospects in getting another one like the one I had. Please don’t take your jobs for granted during this recession. I had to learn the hard way. My Christmas bonus was in the form of a BIG FAT LAY OFF. Thankyouverymuch.
There have been some good things along the way too though. I’ve recently moved out from a dungeon basement apartment I was living in for 2 years. Now I’m in a four-plex with nice big windows and I feel really great about where I live, finally. My boyfriend has a great new job with an awesome global company. He’s lucky to have this job and I’m so grateful he landed it. I’m thankful for my boyfriend; we’ve been together over a year and a half now. Going strong. I’m feeling a bit better about myself finally, after letting some time pass, and I’m hopeful for the new year. I am thankful for friends, family and my loved ones. I will keep my true friends near and hold onto family more than ever.
